Hot Peas & Butta LLC was created as a brand that preserves music, art, film, cultural nostalgia and future nostalgia of the 70’s and 80’s specifically centered on African-American life studies. What originally started out as the name of a party and club night to present Funk, Soul and other black music genres from that era being spun on 45rpm vinyl records while screening rare footage and visuals from the 70s quickly grew to more that a nighttime affair.
Hot Peas & Butta is a mind state shared by many types of creative individuals including DJ’s, graphic designers, photographers, comic cook artist, writers and cultural historians that all share a certain vision and analog aesthetic when creating their works of art. The company itself is known for presenting these works through a series of events that include gallery exhibitions, film screenings, lectures and DJ nights. Our brand has been featured through and worked with clients including Red Bull, Denon Audio, Helsinki Fashion Week, Adidas, Puma, Tribeca Film Festival, IBE Festival, Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival, New York Comic Con, Wizard World, Record Breakin’ Music and more.
Being that our brand was created from our love of nostalgia, the name Hot Peas & Butta was partially inspired by the children’s street game from the 70’s of the same name played by African-American kids and partially by the singer James Brown who would often throw each of those words around as adlibs within his song.
